Think New Year’s Resolutions are just for people?  Not the case! This year, why not have some fun with your goals and make them about helping your pet become healthier and happier?

Check out these possibilities for your 2017 New Year’s Resolutions:

1. Try a New Activity with Your Pet

Getting out of the house and doing something new can be incredibly exciting and fun, especially for dogs. There’s hiking, kayaking, doga (yes, it’s a thing!) – the list is virtually endless. You can also explore meetup.com to find a local group of like-minded pet owners to pal around with.

2. Start Measuring Your Pet’s Food

This is a super easy resolution, but it could be a vital one for your furry friend. If your pet is over- or underweight and you’ve been “eyeballing” the amount of food you serve, switch to careful measuring – with an actual measuring cup – to ensure you’re feeding exactly the right amount. (Check the food package or ask your vet for proper serving sizes.)

3. Improve Your Pet’s Oral Health

Have you been neglecting your pet’s chompers? Dental problems in animals can be painful and inconvenient – but are highly preventable. Use toothpaste made for dogs and cats and brush their teeth daily.

4. Update Your Pet’s ID Info

Has your contact information changed in 2016? Did you get a new phone number or move? Take the opportunity to update the information on your pet’s tags or microchip.

5. Visit Your Vet

You can prevent or minimize a lot of problems by taking your pet in for a yearly veterinary examination. Make an appointment with your vet, and be sure to write down any questions you have about feeding, exercise, behavioral issues, or anything else you could use some advice on.

Choose one – or all – of these New Year’s Resolutions and make 2017 your pet’s best year ever!
