October is Adopt a Shelter Dog Month
Everyone knows that what dogs want most in the world is friendship and attention, and shelter dogs enjoy some extra attention during October’s Adopt a Shelter Dog Month. It’s a great time to remind us of the reasons we’re passionate about making sure every dog finds their furever home.
1. Dogs and humans belong together.
First among these reasons is the incredible power of the human-animal bond. Dogs are called “man’s best friend” because humans bond with few other animals as closely as dogs. Perhaps it’s because we see so much of ourselves in them – the judgement-free innocence of joy and love. They are our steadfast friends in whom we can trust our deepest secrets, emotions, and inner child.
2. Adoption saves lives.
Of course, this bond is why humans so often choose dogs as their animal companions, but why is it so important to adopt from a shelter? According to the ASPCA’s Pet Statistics, over 3 million dogs enter shelters each year, and roughly one-third of them are at risk for euthanization. While these numbers are a bit staggering, it’s important to remember that these statistics represent millions of individuals, each needing its own home, family, and love, if only the right human would come along.
3. Exploring life is more fun with a dog friend!
And finally, the best reason to adopt a shelter dog is for the endless fun and adventure that comes with having a canine companion.
