Pet-Friendly Weekend Getaways from Dallas

A weekend away with your dog sounds simple until you check the map. From Dallas, Waco is about an hour and a half by car. Fredericksburg is about four and a half hours and San Antonio about five, so they work best as a long weekend rather than a quick escape.

This guide covers all three. For each one, you will find dog-friendly places drawn from official city, park, hotel and visitor-bureau pages, what to confirm before you go, and where your dog cannot come along. The last section covers the other option: leaving your dog or cat at home with a sitter, which is the better choice for some trips.

Three trips at a glance

Drive times are approximate and assume no traffic. Check a current map before you leave, and allow extra time in heavy traffic.

Waco: an easy drive with a few rules to check

Waco is the closest of the three, which makes it the easiest to try with a dog. Cameron Park is the city’s large public trail park. Where dogs are allowed, and on what terms, is set by the City of Waco and can change, so confirm the current rules with the city before you go.

One thing to know before you go: Cameron Park Zoo does not allow personal pets. Only service dogs are admitted, and they must stay on a leash. If the zoo is on your list, save it for a trip when your dog is home, or build the day around the park’s trails.

If you plan to stay overnight, Hotel Indigo Waco – Baylor accepts pets in a limited number of rooms, so call before you book. A refundable pet deposit and a non-refundable cleaning fee apply. Call the hotel to confirm fees and any size limit for your dog.

Fredericksburg: Hill Country patios, a city dog park and Enchanted Rock

Fredericksburg suits a dog who likes to be where you are.

Lady Bird Johnson Municipal Park, at 432 Lady Bird Johnson Drive, has a dog park with separate fenced areas for small dogs (under 25 pounds) and large dogs. Dogs must have proof of current vaccination, be in good health, stay attended and in view at all times, and be leashed when they are outside the fenced area. Dogs under four months are not permitted. The Fredericksburg visitor bureau also points visitors to the park’s one-mile Live Oak Creek trail for a walk with a pet. Rules can change, so check with the City of Fredericksburg before you go.

Enchanted Rock State Natural Area, near Fredericksburg, restricts where dogs can go, and some areas of the park are closed to them. Read the dog rules and any entry or reservation requirements on the Texas Parks and Wildlife page before you plan a visit around the rock.

More than 30 Fredericksburg wineries are listed as pet-friendly by Visit Fredericksburg, and each one sets its own policy, so confirm with the winery before you go. Kalasi Cellars welcomes leashed, well-behaved dogs and asks that they keep their distance from the resident llama. Texas Wine Collective offers water bowls and treats for dogs. Pontotoc Vineyard is described as pet-friendly, and Hondo’s and West End Pizza Co. both have outdoor seating that welcomes dogs. Call before you plan a meal around your dog.

Fredericksburg has pet-friendly hotels, motels and guesthouses, and some charge a pet fee. Visit Fredericksburg’s pet-friendly lodging page is a good place to start. Confirm fees and size limits with the property before you book.

San Antonio: a city you can walk with a leash

San Antonio rewards a dog who enjoys a long walk. According to Visit San Antonio, leashed dogs are welcome on the River Walk’s pathways, which are open year-round. Many outdoor restaurants and shops along the River Walk welcome dogs on their patios, but policies vary by business, so call ahead.

At the Pearl, leashed dogs are welcome on the grounds but not in the Gustav’s Geysers fountain, and restaurant patio rules vary, so check with the restaurant first.

Hotel Valencia Riverwalk accepts pets in designated rooms and public areas. A non-refundable pet fee and a pet waiver are required at check-in. The hotel’s policy page does not list the fee or any size limit, so call the hotel before you book.

Before you leave with your dog

• Call every hotel and restaurant you plan to use. Pet policies, fees and size limits change.
• Pack a leash, water, a collapsible bowl, waste bags and your dog’s regular food.
• Bring vaccination records. Some places, including the Fredericksburg dog park and the Pearl, require current vaccinations.
• Plan regular stops on the longer drives, and schedule outdoor time for the cooler parts of the day in summer.

When your dog or cat stays home

Not every trip is a dog trip. A drive of four and a half hours or more each way is a lot to ask for a two-night weekend. A wedding or business dinner may have no room for a dog. Some stops, like the Cameron Park Zoo, do not allow pets at all. In those cases, staying home means your pet keeps the bed, the feeding spot and the walking route they already know.

How to decide

• The drive is long compared with the time you will spend there.
• Your plans include places that do not allow pets.
• Your dog’s routine of meals and walks is hard to keep on the road.
• Your hotel limits pets to certain rooms, charges a fee or requires a waiver.

Care at home for your dog
