Summer is the time for camping! The only thing better than camping is camping with your pet! Here’s a list of a few pet friendly campgrounds near Austin, Texas.
Texas State Parks
Did you know that pets are allowed in ALL Texas state parks? It’s true! Check out the rules and regulations for complete details to be sure you know where pets can and can’t go. Pets must always remain on a leash that is shorter than 6 feet.
Pedernales Falls State Park, where you can camp, mountain bike, picnic, geocache, swim, tube and fish, is located about 30 miles from Austin. If you enjoy hiking, this is a great park for you—trails range from short and easy to several miles and more challenging.
If you want to stay closer to home, McKinney Falls State Park is within the city limits of Austin. The park allows camping, hiking, mountain biking, road biking, and swimming. You can also fish in this park, and thanks to the Tackler Loaner Program, you don’t even need to bring your own fishing rod! Recent rains mean many state parks are experiencing flood, so check the park status page before you go.
Private Campgrounds with Pet Parks
If you’re concerned about your dog getting enough exercise or feeling too confined on a camping trip, check out these campgrounds that have dog parks where your furry friend can stretch her legs and maybe meet some new friends!
KOA in Leander is about 25 miles from the Austin city center and offers lots of amenities. It has a saltwater pool and playground as well as showers and laundry facilities.
If you’d like to go a little further from home, check out Leisure Resort on the San Marcos River. This campground is located about an hour south of Austin on a 150-acre pecan orchard. The resort includes a playground and swimming pool. Visitors can also go tubing on the river or take a walk on a nature trail.
At both campgrounds, pets must remain on leashes when they are outside of your tent or RV, unless they are in the dog park. Pets cannot be left unattended, and they are prohibited from certain areas. Check out the websites for more complete rules.
